Fireworks

The Township of Georgian Bay regulates the setting off of fireworks through Fireworks By-Law 2022-009.

Always check the current fire danger rating before setting off fireworks. This rating determines the relative seriousness of burning conditions and threat of fire.

Fireworks, even with a permit, will not be permitted when the fire danger rating is High or Extreme.

Types of Fireworks

Consumer fireworks are low-hazard fireworks that are available for public purchase and personal use.

As per Fireworks by-law 2022-009, Consumer Fireworks means an outdoor, low hazard, recreational firework that is classified as a subdivison 1 of divison 2 of class 7 Fireworks under the act.

Display fireworks include high-hazard or professional-grade fireworks intended for organized or public displays.

As per Fireworks by-law 2022-009, Display Fireworks means an outdoor, high hazard, recreational firework that is classed as a subdivision of 2 of Division 2 Class 7 Fireworks under the act.

A Fireworks Event Application and approval are required for all display fireworks.

Permitted Dates & Times

Consumer fireworks may only be discharged on:

  • Victoria Day
  • Canada Day
  • Civic Holiday
  • Labour Day
  • Christmas Day
  • New Year’s Eve
  • New Year’s Day

Fireworks are also permitted on the two (2) days immediately preceding and one (1) day following each of the above dates.

Fireworks may only be discharged between dusk and 11:00 p.m.

Fireworks Safety Requirements

To reduce the risk of injury, fire, and property damage:

  • Only adults 18 years of age or older may handle fireworks
  • Never allow children to handle or ignite fireworks
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • Wear protective eyewear when lighting or observing fireworks
  • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands
  • Never light fireworks indoors
  • Only use fireworks in open areas, away from people, buildings, vehicles, trees, and flammable materials
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person
  • Light only one device at a time, then move to a safe distance
  • Never ignite fireworks in a container (including bottles or cans)
  • Do not attempt to re-light malfunctioning fireworks
  • Fully soak spent and unused fireworks in water for several hours before disposal
  • Keep water, a fire extinguisher, or a hose readily available

Anyone wishing to conduct a professional or organized fireworks display must completed a Fireworks Event Application.

Approval is subject to site conditions, weather, fire risk, and operational capacity.

Fees are subject to the current Fees and Charges By-law.
