Seasonal Speed Bumps
To help keep our roads safe for everyone, especially pedestrians, cyclists, and children at play, the Township of Georgian Bay installs seasonal speed bumps in key areas throughout the community.
These traffic-calming measures are strategically placed where speeding is a concern or where extra caution is needed, such as near parks, schools, or high foot-traffic zones. Speed bumps encourage drivers to slow down and stay alert, helping to reduce accidents and improve overall road safety.
They are typically installed in the spring and removed in the fall to accommodate winter road maintenance and snow removal. We appreciate your cooperation in making our roads safer for all.
Load restrictions
The reduced load (max 5 tonne/axle) season starts on March 9, 2026 on all Township and District roads in the Township. Reduced loads protect the structural integrity of our roads during the winter thaw when road bases are soft.

Surface Treated Roads
The Township of Georgian Bay has many “tar and chip” roads, which are roads with a layer of surface treatment. The Township utilizes “tar and chip” paving on many of its roads. Also known as “chip seal” or “single or double surface treatment”, tar and chip paving is used on rural roads with low to medium volumes of traffic as a more cost effective and durable alternative to asphalt paving. Please see the Fact Sheet on Tar and Chip / Surface Treatment for more information.
