Updating Municipal Firearm By-law
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Township of Georgian Bay Strengthens Local Safety Regulations
GEORGIAN BAY, ON – June 6, 2025 – In response to growing public concern over firearm discharge on Crown lands, the Township of Georgian Bay Council is taking action to strengthen local safety regulations. Following Resolution C2024-199, passed on June 3, 2024, Township staff were directed to review and modernize the outdated Firearm Discharge By-law 91-105.
Over the past year, staff have collaborated with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, and the Township prosecutor to draft a proposed new by-law. This draft, presented to the Committee of the Whole on May 6, 2025, introduces updated prohibitions, clear exemptions, and new enforcement measures allowing officers to issue fines where necessary.
Mayor Peter Koetsier responded to the presentation to Council by saying, “Ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors is always a top priority for Council. By modernizing this by-law, we’re responding directly to community concerns while working collaboratively with our enforcement partners to create a clear and responsible framework for firearm discharge.”
To ensure community involvement, Council approved Resolution COW2025-014, confirming a public open house will be held to present the proposed changes, answer questions, and gather resident feedback.
"This updated by-law reflects a thoughtful and coordinated effort to address modern realities. With input from law enforcement and stakeholders, we’re introducing practical tools for enforcement while respecting lawful firearm use. Community feedback at the open house will be a key step in this process," states Corinna King, Supervisor of Municipal Law Enforcement.
The public open house will be scheduled for mid-August at the Baxter Ward Community Centre. Residents are encouraged to attend, learn more about the proposed changes, and share their input. Final dates and details will be announced on the Township’s social media channels and the firearm discharge webpage.
