Township of Georgian Bay Seeks Community Input on Proposed Water Speed Limit in Honey Harbour

TOWNSHIP OF GEORGIAN BAY, ON – February 4, 2026 – The Township of Georgian Bay has been asked to apply to Transport Canada under the Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations (VORR) to establish a 9 km/hr water speed limit in a specific area of Honey Harbour. The proposed zone stretches from North end of Royal Island to the area at the end of Honey Harbour Road, just before the entrance to Lily Pond.

Only a local authority may request such a regulation from the Federal Government. This proposal is rooted in a shared goal: enhancing waterway safety, protecting sensitive shorelines and ecosystems, and preserving the quality of life within our community.

To support a transparent and thorough consultation process, the Township is inviting residents, stakeholders and waterway users to take part in an online survey. Community input will directly inform the Township’s next steps.

The Township encourages feedback from a broad range of stakeholders because this proposed speed limit affects how the community lives, works and travels on the water. Input is welcomed from Honey Harbour residents, local boat owners, marinas, and regular waterway users, as well as local businesses and Chambers of Commerce whose operations may be impacted. Law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and environmental groups provide essential perspectives on safety and ecological protection, while neighbouring Indigenous communities offer important insights tied to stewardship and shared waterways. Local government officials, along with lake and boating associations, also play a key role in understanding long-term implications. Together, these voices help to ensure that any decision reflects the collective needs and priorities in the region.
