Fire Rating and Burn Permits

The Township of Georgian Bay is located in Restricted Fire Zone RFZ 27 (District of Muskoka). The Muskoka fire season runs from April 1 to October 31 each year. The fire danger rating is verified daily and updated whenever the rating changes.

The Muskoka Fire Danger Rating is determined using the Fire Weather Index (FWI), an internationally used method for determining the risk of fires in open air. It uses factors such as the relative humidity, temperature, previous 24-hour rain amount, wind directions and wind speed in combination with the forest fuel type and loads to determine the risk of the forest to certain fire types. From this calculation the Forest Fire Danger Rating is made in consultation with the Fire Chiefs of the six area municipalities and the Ministry of Natural Resources.

The Open Air Burning By-law regulates the keeping, licensing, and controlling of animals in the Township of Georgian Bay.

Burn Permits

Township of Georgian Bay residents are required to obtain a burn permit for any open-air burning between January 1 and December 31. Daytime burning is permitted with a valid permit.

Safety: Applying for a burn permit helps reduce the risk of uncontrolled fires. Properly supervised burns lower the chance of wildfires that can threaten lives, property, and natural areas.

Environmental Protection: Unregulated burning can release harmful pollutants into the air, affecting both public health and the environment. A burn permit ensures you follow guidelines designed to limit these impacts.

Legal Compliance: All outdoor burning in the Township of Georgian Bay must comply with municipal by-laws. Having a valid permit confirms you are meeting legal requirements and avoiding fines or penalties.

Burn Permit Application

Burn Permits can now be purchased online through our application found below.

Burn Permits are also available at the Township Office (99 Lone Pine Road, Port Severn), and the three library branches in Honey Harbour, MacTier and Port Severn.

The Georgian Bay Fire and Emergency Services Department will review your burn permit application.

Please allow up to 3 business days for processing.

Important: Submitting an application does not mean your burn permit is approved. You must wait to receive official confirmation and a valid permit from the Fire Department before conducting any burning.

Burn Period: Burn permits are valid year-round, from January 1 to December 31, and must be renewed annually.

Know the Rules: After receiving your permit, review all guidelines and restrictions. These include what materials may be burned, required safety measures, and conditions under which burning is allowed.

Check the Fire Danger Rating: Always confirm the current fire danger rating before burning.
