Portable Pump Safety
How to Safely Operate a Portable Fire Pump
Safety Considerations When Using a Portable Fire Pump
-
Hydro Lines
Downed or low-hanging power lines may be present during emergencies. Water conducts electricity—never operate a pump or hose near hydro lines.
-
Fuel Sources
Portable pumps use gasoline, which is highly flammable. Fuel spills, hot engines, and open flames increase the risk of fire or explosion. Always refuel safely and only when the engine is off and cooled.
-
Arrival of Firefighters
Professional firefighters may arrive quickly with specialized equipment and a coordinated response plan. Pump users must be prepared to stop operations and follow instructions immediately to avoid interfering with emergency response.
-
Wildlife
Fires and emergencies can disturb wildlife. Snakes and other animals may seek shelter near water sources or pump locations. Stay alert and maintain a safe distance.
-
Proper Attire
Inadequate clothing increases the risk of burns, cuts, and injuries. Avoid loose clothing and always wear sturdy footwear, long pants, gloves, and eye protection when operating a pump.
-
Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke
Operating a pump can be physically demanding, especially in hot conditions. Take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, and stop immediately if you feel dizzy, weak, or unwell
Stay Tuned!
The Georgian Bay Fire and Emergency Services Department is actively developing a mapping tool to display all portable pump locations across the area.
In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding pump locations, please contact the Fire Department directly.
