Fishing

As the largest bay on the Great Lakes, our waterways contain a tremendous variety of fish, including bass, trout and pike. Our lakes and rivers are so plentiful that even the youngest or least experienced in your family is sure to catch something! View Muskoka Tourism’s map to learn what type of fish our lakes are stocked with.

Tips for a good fishing experience

Be polite to your fishing neighbours and the environment by following these rules:

  • Respect other fishers beside you and don't crowd fishing areas

  • Don't litter

  • Don't leave hooks unattended

  • Don't release live bait

  • Be careful when fishing near flowing water

Don't trespass when choosing a place to fish. All fishing sites are on public land and it's your responsibility to make sure you aren't on private property.

With the exception of Family Fishing Weeks, you need a licence to fish in Ontario. Visit the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's website for information on how and where to get a licence.

You can't always eat what you catch. Check the guide for Eating Ontario Fish or call 1-800-820-2716 to order a copy.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry identifies fishing rules, size limits and size restrictions. Visit their website for more information.

Licence-free family fishing

Twice a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario without buying a fishing licence, during:

  • Family Fishing Weekend in February
  • Family Fishing Week in July

The next licence-free period is June 30 to July 8, 2018. Remember to follow fishing regulations and obey size and catch limits.
