Temporary Closure of the MacTier Union Cemetery

The MacTier Union Cemetery is temporarily closed to the public, effective as of May 29, 2026. 

This decision was made following the identification of potential danger arising from unstable trees and tree limbs on the cemetery grounds. 

The Township understands the deep importance of the cemetery as a place of remembrance for families and friends whose loved ones are laid to rest there, and recognizes the disappointment this closure causes. 

The safety of residents, visitors, contractors, and staff is the Township’s top priority. Staff have engaged a professional arborist who will be on site to assess the situation at the cemetery within the next week. 

Any questions regarding cemetery services can be directed to the Corporate Services Department at clerks@gbtownship.ca, or by phone at 705-538-2337 ext. 333. Updates on the closure of MacTier Union Cemetery and its re-opening will be posted to the Township’s website and social media channels.
