Province to Appoint Next District Chair

The Government of Ontario will appoint the next head of council of the District Municipality of Muskoka for the 2026-2030 term of Council.

The Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Rob Flack, indicated his intent to make the appointment following the Province’s passing of the Better Regional Governance Act, 2026. The Act grants the Province the ability to appoint heads of council in several upper-tier municipalities. The Act also gives appointed heads of council “strong chair” powers, mirroring the strong mayor framework seen in various municipalities across the Province, including the Township of Georgian Bay.

To be considered for appointment as District Chair, individuals must be eligible to vote in one of Muskoka’s lower-tier municipalities.
