There's no time to waste during a fire. That's why it's so important to make a step-by-step plan to help you escape. Everyone in your home needs to know what to do and where to go when the smoke alarms sound.
Creating a fire escape plan
Take a few minutes with everyone in your home to make a fire escape plan using the steps below or this escape plan template.
Step 1: Draw a floor plan of your home with exits |
Draw a floor plan for each storey of your home. Include all possible emergency exits (e.g. doors, windows, stairs) and features (e.g. roof, garage, porch) that would help you escape. Show two ways out of every room, if possible. |
Step 2: Identify special needs |
Decide who will assist the very young, older adults, people with disabilities or pets in your household. |
Step 3: Choose a meeting place outside |
Pick a meeting place that's a safe distance from your home and easily remembered. A tree, street light or a neighbour's home are all good choices. |
Step 4: Practice your escape |
Review the plan with everyone in your household, making sure escape routes are practical and easy to use. Hold a fire drill twice a year and time how long it takes to escape. |
