As of Spring 2021, the Georgian Bay Biosphere (GBB) and the Township of Georgian Bay together with partners from Baxter Ward Lions, ICECAP, TD Bank and Community Foundation of Canada coordinated the construction and maintenance of the Port Severn Community Garden (PSCG) to grow fruits and vegetables.
This garden was the first of its kind in the Township of Georgian Bay and will build on GBB’s 12-year history of providing food skills opportunities.
Together with our esteemed partners we are excited to announce that MacTier has received funding to begin the process of developing a community garden of it's own. If you are interested you can find the application below. While filling out the application please ensure that you select the area in which you wish to have a plot.
The gardens are also a climate action demonstration site; food production will be calculated against the usual carbon emissions of the produce harvested.
Garden plots are free, first-come first-served to residents who apply through the Township. A waiting list will be kept for applicants after the garden is fully allocated.
Twenty percent of produce grown is encouraged as a donation to the Georgian Bay & MacTier Food Banks. The remaining 80% will be kept by the grower. Participants will feel they are contributing and connected to the community and will benefit from physical activity and fresh produce. The gardens are organic, with composters, rain barrels, and a toolbox for storage with a lock.
Our first MacTier Community Garden meeting will be held February 2, 2022 at 6:30 PM to 8:00 Pm on Zoom. In order to receive the agenda and link to the meeting please register below. More information is below in the Rules and Etiquette.
